The 4-Week Intercity Moving Checklist (India Edition)

Intercity moves fail in the paperwork, not on the highway. This checklist keeps the boring parts on schedule so moving day is just physics.

4 weeks out

• Fix the date window and request quotes. Any firm price needs a survey — schedule video surveys with 2–3 movers.
• Start the society NOC clock at both ends if you’re in apartments. Some Mumbai societies need a week; Gurgaon high-rises want 24–48 hours plus a lift slot.
• Declutter ruthlessly. Every carton you don’t move saves packing, volume and money. Sell, donate, discard before the survey so the quote reflects reality.

3 weeks out

• Choose the mover on the written quote, not the phone charm. Lock the date, lift slots and gate passes.
• Notify your landlord / agreement parties per your notice period; photograph the current home’s condition.
• Begin the address-change list: bank, employer, school, Aadhaar-linked services, subscriptions, DTH/broadband disconnection dates.

2 weeks out

• Start self-packing personal categories: documents, jewellery, hard drives, medicines — these travel with you, never in the truck.
• Plan the car/bike: condition-report slots if they’re going on a carrier.
• Freeze the furniture plan for the new home. That wardrobe that won’t fit the new bedroom is cheaper sold than shipped.

1 week out

• Confirm the gate pass and lift slot at both addresses; share vehicle details where the society requires them.
• Defrost the fridge 24 hours before move day; drain washing-machine hoses.
• Pack the first-night bag: chargers, toiletries, two days of clothes, basic kitchen kit, kids’ essentials, documents folder.

Move day

• Be present (or deputise one named adult) at loading to sign the inventory list — photograph the sealed truck.
• Keep the coordinator’s number; you should get proactive updates at each transit milestone.
• At delivery, check cartons against the inventory before signing the receipt. Note exceptions in writing immediately.

First 48 hours in the new city

• Beds and kitchen first; the rest can wait a weekend.
• Update gas connection, broadband and address-with-employer early — they have the longest lead times.
• Flatten and stack cartons; agree pickup with your mover or a local recycler rather than clogging the society bins (your new neighbours are watching, and so is the RWA).
